Where the Bay Meets Tomorrow

Where the Bay Meets Tomorrow
By Karen Rabe (Charles)
September settles softly on the bay,
changing the light in its quiet way.
The water still sparkles beneath the sun,
but summer is loosening, one thread at a time.
I know something of loosening, too.
Inside our home are the years we have gathered—
rooms filled with laughter,
cupboards holding memories,
gardens shaped by our hands,
windows that have framed this beautiful bay
through countless mornings and sunsets.
Now we sort through a lifetime.
What do we carry?
What do we give away?
What have we kept because we needed it,
and what have we kept simply because
letting go is another way of saying goodbye?
Outside, the tide understands.
It comes to the shore
and then releases it,
pulling away without losing
what the shoreline has meant.
Perhaps that is what we are learning.
We can leave this house
without leaving behind the life we lived here.
The dinners, the celebrations,
the ordinary afternoons,
the work and the laughter,
the people we welcomed through our door—
none of these fit inside a moving box.
They travel with us.
And there is something wonderful
waiting beyond this goodbye.
A smaller home.
A cozier place to settle into at day's end.
A yard that asks less of us.
Fewer things to repair, prune, paint, and tend.
More time to go where we want to go,
to linger over coffee,
to discover new places,
to meet new friends,
to say yes when adventure calls.
Freedom has its own kind of beauty.
Still, I know there will come a morning
when I stand beside this bay
and realize it is one of my last mornings here.
I will watch the gulls sweep across the water.
I will listen to the waves touch the shore.
I will look back at the house
that sheltered so much of our life
and allow myself to be grateful
and sad at the very same time.
Because a beautiful life
deserves a beautiful goodbye.
Then we will turn toward what comes next.
Not because we are finished,
but because we are ready.
Like summer giving way to autumn,
our lives are changing season—
not losing their beauty,
only wearing it differently.
The bay will remain behind us,
shimmering beneath an open sky.
And ahead?
A smaller house.
A lighter load.
New neighbors.
New laughter.
New mornings waiting at unfamiliar windows.
We are not closing the book.
We are simply turning the page,
carrying all that we have loved
into a life with more room
for whatever comes next.
