Elouise Riding Zaynab in the Moroccan Desert
Elouise Riding Zaynab in the Moroccan Desert

A Glimpse Too Far

By Karen Charles

I loved the whole book for many reasons. The warm relationships among family members, the vivid descriptions of the house's rooms, which always contributed to the mood and atmosphere surrounding Elouise, and the nonverbal expressions of everyone involved in each setting and situation drew me into the story. It was also very clear how deeply Elouise loved Penny, her horse.

It was difficult to put the book down due to the drama and the changes in locations. I particularly loved Morocco and Belize, and the mystery and suspense in each setting. The author did a great job of maintaining the theme, the tension, the storyline, and the characters throughout the book and with each event. While there were many shifts in the settings and characters, the variety of characters, along with the continuity of the plot, kept the story moving and exciting. I kept looking forward to the next event, the next shift, and the next new characters to find out what new surprise was coming up. I also liked the detailed descriptions of Morocco and Belize, along with the very believable accounts of the sights, sounds, and scents which lent authenticity to both the characters and the cultures of the countries. I almost felt like I was there, especially in Morocco.

Stylistically, Karen Charles's use of clues and foreshadowing kept me guessing about what was going to happen next, inviting me to stay with the narrative and find out if I had guessed correctly.

Karen Charles has a way with words and space/time issues that kept me mesmerized. I like that! Great Job!
